Free Books #OpenBook Blog Hop

What’s your opinion on authors giving their books away for free?

If you are a heavy reader of e-books, you probably know that there are a lot of free books out there. Enough that you could fill whatever e-reader you use without spending a penny. And you know what? Some of those books are good. Really good.

But you won’t find any of my books on that list. and that’s on purpose. I don’t give my books away for free on a mass basis. (I have been known to give away a copy or two to interested readers.) My reasoning is simple.

I work hard on my books. I put a lot of time and effort into writing my character’s stories. My time should be worth something,

But beyond that, It’s not a totally free process to get them ready for publication. I don’t have the skill set needed to format them in the way they need to be set to work properly with all the various e-readers. I pay someone to do it for me. There’s the cost of editing and covers, too.

Then there is the delivery fee. At least one of the major sites (cough, Amazon, cough) charges the author a small delivery fee when their book is downloaded. (not on free books, however.) That’s on top of the cut they take for their share of royalties.

Now, I am very aware of the concept that readers will so love your free book that they will go right out and buy the rest of the books in a series. I’ve seen that stats that indicate that this use to work. I’ve also heard the discussions about whether it works any more or not, and I lean toward the side that says it doesn’t. Why?

I believe the market is over-saturated. There are too may free books out there, and even if they get
downloaded they don’t get read. Sorry, my author friends, but I’m a poster child for that. I’m not sure how many unread books I have on my app. Too many. And I’m fairly picky about what I download.

So, I won’t price my books for free. I do try to price my books at an “attractive” level, one that won’t scare off potential readers to a fairly unknown author. And I have one book (The Marquesa’s Necklace) priced at 99¢ to attempt to draw in new readers. (Haven’t read it yet? Go buy it! Please?) In advertising terminology, it’s my loss leader. My hope is that if there’s at least a small investment made to obtain the book, there’s a higher chance that it will actually get read.

But I would love to hear how readers feel about this topic. The comments are open! And while I’m waiting, I’m going to hop on over and find out what the other authors think.

Strange Conditions #OpenBook Blog Hop

What’s the strangest medical or psychological condition you’ve ever given to one of your characters?

It would be easy to say that many of the characters in my Free Wolves series suffer from clinical lycanthropy. In simple terms, that’s the condition of thinking you are a werewolf (or other animal.) In more technical terms, it’s defined as a rare psychiatric syndrome that involves a delusion that the affected person can transform into, has transformed into, or is a non-human animal. Its name is associated with the mythical condition of lycanthropy, a supernatural affliction in which humans are said to physically shapeshift into wolves. (from Wikipedia.) But since my characters can actually shift, it’s not a delusion. Or is it?

I’ll leave you to ponder that question and move on to Oak Grove and Harmony. If you’ve read the books, you know she has a few quirks to her personality. Counting stairs is one of them, and being obsessed with naming things is another. Her morning habit of coffee and reading the newspaper in the summer borders is more than a pattern. Then there’s her weekend cleaning ritual, chores always done in the same order.

Although I didn’t plan it, those symptoms point to a slight (and undiagnosed) case of OCD. (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) It’s defined as a common, chronic and long-lasting disorder in which a person has uncontrollable, reoccurring thoughts (obsessions) and behaviors (compulsions) that he or she feels the urge to repeat over and over.

That may be part of what makes the librarian job so perfect for Harmony. There’s a certain sense of ritual in many of the daily tasks. Shelving books, for example. Not only does it involve finding the right spot for each book, I can see her straightening up all the neighboring books in a perfect line, all the spines the exact same distance from the edge of the shelf. Or carefully arranging the magazines in the periodicals section so they are in chronological order.
Here’s one example from The Marquesa’s Necklace:

I climbed the stone steps, smiling, counting them as I had habitually done all those years ago. As a teenager, the library became my second home. One, two, three ….fifteen. There is now a wheelchair ramp in the back, but the steps are unchanged.
I don’t consider Obsessive Compulsive Disorder strange, but it opens up a whole host of quirks for me to play with in exploring Harmony’s personality.
Now, let’s see what the other authors inflicted on their characters!

Changing My Life #OpenBook Blog Hop

If you could change one thing in your life and not have it affect you negatively later, what would you pick?

Let me start by saying I’d be afraid to change anything, despite the disclaimer about not affecting me negatively later. What’s the saying- for every action, there’s an equal and opposite reaction? Yeah, I’m pretty sure that’s true. But for the sake of this blog, I’ll set that feeling aside.

If you’ve read my bio, you know I’m a computer geek. It’s my job. I won’t bore you with the technical details, but between my job and writing, I spend far too much time staring at a computer screen. And I wouldn’t change that.

So, what would I change? I’d figure out a way to get started in the computer field sooner. I was no spring chicken when I touched my first keyboard. Heck, I’m old enough that in high school, there was no such thing as keyboarding. Kids took typing classes back then.

And the test they gave predicting what field we should study didn’t even include a category for computers. I forget what the score suggested I make a career in, but it didn’t happen. Of course, personal computers didn’t exist back then, but computers were mainstream for big business.  Good programmers were sought after. But I have no desire to be a programmer.

Move ahead a few years, when personal computers started to hit the market and servers no longer filled entire rooms. That’s when I wished I gotten started. Before the dot.com boom. (I came in at the end of that era.) Of course, with my extra knowledge, I would have bought stock in technology companies while it was still cheap.

What would my life look like now if that had happened? I hate to even think about it. I have a pretty darn good job now and I wouldn’t want to mess it up. Or all the other good things in my life.

Now, let’s go find out what  the other authors would change.

Must Haves for Camping #OpenBook Blog Hop

With the Memorial Day holiday marking the unofficial beginning of summer in the United States, the season of cookouts and camping has arrives. What are your “must haves” for these events?

I started camping when I was a Girl Scout, eons ago, and learned the basic skills. As I got older, we moved on to more advanced knowledge. I even took a forest survival course one summer (not with the Girl Scouts.)

But camping as an adult, I like to keep it simple. I don’t want to spend hours tending a fire or making sure the charcoal is at the perfect heat. I have better things to do.

There are a few things I’m willing to splurge on. Really good chocolate for S’mores and Banana Boats. Real butter for roasted corn on the cob. Better quality burger.

But food is only one part of camping. I found out, through experience, that it makes sense to buy quality equipment. A foam cooler won’t do the same job as a high quality one. A good  tent will keep you drier in a rainstorm than a cheap one. And don’t skimp on safety equipment. (Yes, a bucket and shovel are necessities for camp fire safety.)

Speaking of safety, first aid supplies need to be checked each year, expired items thrown away and new ones bought. If they have been stored in hot or cold conditions, they may expire faster than they would in a climate controlled environment. A good practice is to start fresh with everything each year just in case.

There’s one more must-have. Or two. Peace and quiet. When I go camping, I like to be in an out-of-the-way spot with as few people around as possible. I’m constantly in search of a spot that only a few people know about. Those spots are disappearing as more and more people discover the joys of camping. I think I spotted a new one this past weekend, so I’m looking forward to checking it out.

Now, even though I’m a day late, I’m off to find out what the others in this hop consider as their must-haves.

What’s in a Headline? #OpenBook Blog Hop

Do you read the trashy tabloids while you wait in line at the grocery store? What headlines grab your attention and why?

It’s been a long time since I’ve perused the headlines of one of those tabloids that used to grace every checkout stand in every  grocery store. I remember the days when Elvis sightings seemed to be the main headline each and every week, followed closely by alien abductions. But now I gravitate towards self-checkout (I’m faster than most of the cashiers!) so I don’t stay caught up on the “news.”

So, I decided to make a visit to the website of one of the more famous of the tabloids. With a certain royal wedding in the news, I picked a good week for it. The top headline screamed “Meghan Markle’s Secret First Husband Found.” (We all knew she’d been married before, right?)

Then we get a story about William Shatner hitting on his co-stars. Yawn. Move along.

Ah, another story inspired by the royal wedding. Decades of dirt! Bizarre lost sex secrets of the royal family! Let’s find out about what sex toys they use. Because sex sells.

There’s about five more stories tied to the wedding, neatly interspersed with the sordid stories of other celebrities. To my disappointment, not a single Elvis or alien in site. So here’s my headline-“Elvis attends the royal wedding in disguise!”

Let’s try another one. “Meghan Markle’s first husband was an alien!” Or “Is Prince Harry a virgin?” How about “Did the ghost of Princess Diana walked Meghan Markle up the aisle?”

I could keep going- “Harry and Meghan’s marriage doomed” but I don’t want to have all the fun. Make up your own headline and share it in the comments. In the meantime, I’m going to check out and see what the other authors favorite tabloid headlines are.

Top 5 junk foods #OpenBook Blog Hop

Tell us about your top five junk foods or your top five healthy snacks.

I happen to like chocolate. A lot. It’s my “stress” food.
And I’m not terribly picky about what shape or form chocolate comes in. But I do love a good brownie.A good gooey but not raw brownie.

Unfortunately, I can’t make good brownies. I blame it on the oven cooking unevenly or not keeping the temperature consistent. Or maybe I don’t have a good recipe. And boxed mixes never have quite the right flavor. So when someone who is a better cook than I am offers me a brownie, I won’t turn it down. Heck, I won’t turn it down even if it’s no better than mine!

We’re not done with chocolate yet. Second on my list are chocolate chip cookies. I like mine a bit on the thicker side so the middle are soft. I’m good with throwing in nuts and chunks of chocolate, something a bit more tasty than normal chocolate chips. I’m even good with white chocolate in my cookies.

I could go on with the chocolate theme but it’s time for a little variety. How about ice cream? As a teenager, I worked for a short time in an independent ice cream shop. I  got to order the different flavors of ice cream from an small dairy and make all sorts of goodies With no corporate rules to follow, the customers could mix and match whatever flavors and toppings they wanted. Some of the creations were works of art. And of course, peanuts, whipped cream and a cherry on top were standard. But I got spoiled and it’s hard to find ice cream that matches the flavor from that dairy (that doesn’t exist anymore.)

Moving along and avoiding chocolate…jelly beans! Even the black ones! All year long, not just as Easter. I know they aren’t calorie free, but somehow they seem “healthier” than most other candies.

And we’re down to number five, and I can’t resist. More chocolate. Dark chocolate, specifically. give me a chunk of good, rich, dark chocolate. I won’t name any brands, but you can sure tell me your favorite brand of chocolate in the comments! Maybe there’s one out there I haven’t tried yet.

While I’m waiting, let’s check out the other authors top five.

Tell us about your top five junk foods or your top five healthy snacks.

Wolves’ Gambit #MFRWHooks

Wolves’ Gambit is my new release. Although it’s the third book in the Free Wolves series, it can be read as a stand-alone. In this scene, Lori Grenville, the main character, is confronted by Hyrum, the pack enforcer.

Hyrum studied her, his probing gaze another intimidation tactic. “I can’t read you and I don’t like it. I don’t trust you.”
“You mean that whole ‘thinking at each other’ thing you guys do? You’re not the only one who can’t tell what’s on my mind. I can’t explain why. Maybe it’s because I’m human and my brain works differently than yours does.” Or the months of training that taught her how to close her mind to all but the most powerful alphas.
“You make me nervous. I’m not good to be around when I’m nervous.”
“You make it sound like I’m some kind of threat. Little ol’ me? That’s almost funny.”
His growl reverberated in the office. “I take my job seriously.”
Not the most opportune time, but Lori grabbed the opening. “Why?”
He blinked several times at the unexpected change of direction. “Why what?”
“Why are you so committed to the Jaegers? I’ve watched how they treat you. They don’t abuse you as far as can see, but they don’t respect you either. Why do you stay here? Haven’t you ever considered returning to your pack?”
He reacted as if she’d slapped him, taking a step backward. “Who said I’m not respected?”
“No one has to say anything. Jaeger is using you. It’s clear by the way he treats you. You’re disposable.”
“This pack raised me. I owe them.”
“This pack ripped you from your family. You are an adult now. You’re free to make decisions for yourself. If you want to leave, you can.”
Lori didn’t expect to see a shadow of sadness cross his face. “There’s no place for me to go. My pack of birth doesn’t want me. They believe I’ll be a spy for the Jaeger’s.”
“I’m sorry, Hyrum.” She meant it sincerely. “Have you ever considered going packless?”
“And go where? I don’t have the skills to hold a human job. How would I live?”
“You must be good at something.”
“I’m an enforcer. That’s who I am and I’m proud of it.”
She didn’t want to make him angrier. “You’re right. I’m sorry. I overstepped. I’ve never heard anyone say you weren’t good at your job.”
“As long as you understand that and don’t get in my way, Grenville. I still think you’re hiding something. If you remember anything else about the stranger, you’ll tell me, right?”
“Absolutely.” Not. “Can I get back to work now?”
He jerked his head towards the door. “Go.”
As she squeezed past him, he grabbed her arm. “One more thing. I may only be the pack’s enforcer, but you’re nothing but a bartender. Understand?”

She pulled away, ignoring the pain. She’d have a bruise in the morning. “I may be a bartender, but at least I respect myself. Do you?”

Blurb:

Wolf-shifter Lori Grenville was rescued from near-slavery and a brutal pack leader by the Free Wolves. To pay back the favor, she’s dedicated her life to helping others in the same situation, leading shifters to safety and a new start, risking her life in the process. She’s faced down alphas and has no qualms in undermining pack structure.

Now she’s challenged with the task of restoring an alpha to his rightful place. If she gets it right, she can stop a war from ripping apart two packs and spreading across an entire state. If she fails, she’ll be among the first to die.

There’s still the option of walking away and letting the Jaeger and Destin packs destroy each other. That means she’ll fail in her original mission of rescuing the daughter of the Jaeger alpha before the girl is forced into marriage for political gain.

Lori hasn’t failed in a mission yet. This one may be the exception.

Gifts for your Author #OpenBook Blog Hop

When writing is your profession or hobby, chances are you’ve received all sorts of bookish gifts from friends (or purchased them for yourself)!

I trend towards minimalism when it comes to decorating. Obviously, books and computers don’t count. The more books the merrier. So, I don’t normally ask for “bookish” gifts, I ask for books.

My birthday is easy. That’s about the time of year a new Longmire book comes out. All I have to do is give my darling hubby a gentle reminder, and a new book will show up along with my cake.

For Christmas I often asks for books of poetry or books about the art of writing. Last year I got adventuresome and requested the first book in the Jack Reacher series, Killing Floor. I enjoyed it, but I don’t know if those books will become a tradition.

I have been gifted two “Harry Potter” wands that are also pens. I guess that counts as “writer-ish”?

So what’s on my wish list if you want to buy a book for me? I can always find room for a new book on my already crowded bookshelves.

Introduce me to a new science fiction author. I haven’t read science fiction for too long. Or perhaps a few biographies. I might be hard to please there, because they can’t be of current  political figures or celebrities. I haven’t kept up with the Collegium Chronicles by Mercedes Lackey (and there’s a bunch of her books I  haven’t read) so, that might be an easy place to start.

While I find room a place for that new book (that isn’t piled on my desk!) let’s head over and find out what the other authors suggest.

April 30, 2018 – A list of book-related gift ideas
When writing is your profession or hobby, chances are you’ve received all sorts of bookish gifts from friends (or purchased them for yourself)! Whether it’s a book light that you love, a framed print of your favorite literary quote, or a pair of Hobbit-inspired socks, these accessories can serve as the start to a great blog post. Though this type of content can work all year round, we find the greatest success in December as book lovers start looking for holiday gift ideas.

Bookshelves and Reading Nooks #OpenBook Blog Hop

Is there such a thing as a bookworm who doesn’t appreciate photos of cozy reading nooks or gorgeous bookshelves?

I’ve got three full size bookshelves in my writing area. They are pretty well packed, although not necessarily only with books. (There’s also my collection of LP’s. And computer parts.) But the house is in transition now, so no pictures.

To appease the blogging gods, I went looking for a few dream spots for reading. Everyone has a different idea of what that means. (Thanks, Pinterest!)

I love the way this one looks—the combination of light and dark, the wood and the tree. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look all that comfortable. No good back support for long reading sessions.

This one is better. All that space for books, and the fireplace is great. (but where’s the chair to sit in front of the fireplace?) And I love the window seat, but again, if you put your legs up on the seat and lean against the wall, your back will start hurting before long.

What’s the deal with blocking off the bottom shelf in this one? And if you stand on the bed to reach the top shelves, you’d better find something better than than antlers to hang onto.

This looks comfortable, but where’s the bookshelf?

This one isn’t bad, but I’d replace the knickknacks with books. At least there are enough pillows that you should be able to get comfortable.

So I didn’t find the “perfect” reading nook. But what it comes down to is the perfect spot is wherever you can find a place to sit down, open a book, and ignore the rest of the world, even for a few minutes. So find your favorite spot, open up your copy of Wolves’ Gambit, and read away, while I head off to see what the other authors are sharing.

April 23, 2018 – Images of reading nooks or bookshelf designs.
Is there such a thing as a bookworm who doesn’t appreciate photos of cozy reading nooks or gorgeous bookshelves? We think not, and have found success rounding up these types of bookish images. Choosing a particular season or unifying theme helps to keep the content focused and repeatable, like outdoor reading nooks or DIY bookshelves. Pinterest and Instagram are great channels to repurpose this image-based content.

P.J. Fiala and her new release, Ford.

Yes, a different PJ and another new release!

Book Description:

Sometimes the flames of desire run hotter than a mere fire.

Ford Montgomery is working the case of his life. Trailing the arsonist who killed his parents, the former bounty hunter will soon make this guy pay for his crimes. After that, Ford plans to reclaim his house from his ex-wife and retire to his home in the mountains.

Megan Marshal thought she’d ditched her ex husband, until she finds out the lying scumbag stole from a man nobody steals from. Megan has no clue where he is now, but the cartel is convinced she’s the key to getting their product back and they’re determined to make her talk.

When Ford rescues Megan from a burning building, their paths abruptly align. However, Ford keeps secrets from her, and she’s had enough of men and their secrets. Can they work together to accomplish their goals? Or will they get scorched by the blazing passion sparking between them?

EXCERPT

Rummaging in the cupboards to find something to scrounge up for dinner he tried relaxing his jaw. If he kept it clamped tight like he was doing now, he’d end up with lock jaw, or arthritis or something equally awful. But, he was irritated that he was here, in this house, that he swore he wouldn’t come back to until it was his, completely, lock stock and barrel. Trouble was, when he tried to think of a safe place to keep Megan, this was the first place that came to mind. He knew it was safe, he’d built it with safety in mind. In his line of work, it wasn’t uncommon for some of the people he had to locate to have angry family members or associates and he didn’t want to be taken unawares. Which reminded him. Walking to the desk in the corner of the living room, he unlocked the top drawer. Lifting the lid on the laptop he kept in there he waited for it to wake up, logged in, pulled up his security system. Turning all the cameras on and monitoring the entire property via closed circuit monitors, he went back to the kitchen to finish looking for something to eat. Tomorrow he’d have to see if Emmy could bring some food up here.

A few cans of soup, some crackers, and some cans of peaches would be lunch. Pretty bleak, maybe he’d call Emmy to bring supper up here. Turning he spied the wine rack, ah things were looking up. Selecting a nice, full bodied red sangria, he set it on the counter as he pulled a pan from the drawer below the stove to heat the soup in. Setting to the task of pulling bowls and spoons from their respective spaces, he set their eating places at the counter. Wiping the dust from the wine glasses he set them in front of the bowls and opened the shallow drawer that held the wine opener.
Popping the cork from the top, Megan entered the kitchen, a soft smile on her face. “How long have you lived here?”

“About eleven years.”
She walked to the french doors and looked out over the scenery. “But, you don’t live here now?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“It’s a long story.” Pouring their glasses of wine. “It’s also temporary.”
She turned toward him, crossed her arms over her chest and stared at him. “Where do you live since you’re not living here?”

He took a deep breath. Figures she’d want to know all about him. He didn’t usually share much of his life. Still too much up in the air.

“I have a little cottage down the mountain by my sister’s house. I stay there when I’m not working.”

He watched her move toward him, the sun streaming in the French doors perfectly outlined her body in those sexy jeans and pink t-shirt. Purely sexy from head to toe. He’d bet she didn’t even know it. Her full breasts jiggled as she walked and his mouth went dry. It’d been far too long. Unfortunately he hadn’t thought this through completely. Staying here with her just might be harder than he thought.

“So, you work so much you have a house in the mountains you don’t want to live in because it’s a long story so you stay in the cabin down by your sister. And then you go to work. Is that about right?”

“About.”

She chuckled. “Well, I don’t know how I’m going to get any peace here what with you talking so much and all.”

Turning to the stove, he stirred the soup, twisted the knob on the stove to turn the burner off and filled both of their bowls.

“Vegetable soup and crackers and wine. It’s not much, but it’s all I have. I’ll call Emmy to bring up some food later. I also have some meat in the freezer downstairs that I can thaw if Emmy’s busy.”

He sat next to her at the counter and they began eating in silence. Or so he thought.

“What does Emmy do for a living?”

“She’s a defense attorney. A damn good one too.”

“Is your whole family involved with criminals?”

He chuckled, “Nah, just Emmy and me. Dawson is a plumber and owns his own company. He deals in shit, just not the same kind as Emmy and I.”

She giggled. “That’s a good one.”

“So tell me about Waylon. Why did you marry a piece of scum like him to begin with?”

She bit into a cracker and stared straight ahead. “Gosh damn, but isn’t that the million dollar question right now? I’ve been kicking myself since the first year.”

She sipped her wine and he watched her swallow, the graceful curve of her neck, her unblemished skin, her auburn hair looked thick and shiny and he wanted to touch it. Run his fingers through its softness. Tuck the strands that had escaped her ponytail behind her delicate ear.
